1. How to apply
Applicants can apply for an Apprenticeship direct to Central Sussex College or by talking to their careers (Connexions) personal adviser. The applicant is then contacted and sent a date for interview.
2. Are all applicants interviewed and if so where/how does this happen?
All applicants are interviewed. Interviews take place at the college in Crawley.
3. Does training take place at the work place or at other places as well?
Apprenticeship training is normally one day a week at college and four days per week at work. The exceptions are in Care, Business Admin, Customer Service, Retail and Hospitality which are completed mainly in the workplace with some workshops.
4. Can a training programme be started at any point in the year?
Applicants can start throughout the year in most occupations - contact the college for the latest position.
5. How much do apprentices normally get paid?
Employers are encouraged to pay the rate for the job for the industry. Final agreement is between employer and apprentice. From September 2009 the minimum weekly pay is £95 a week.
6. Are all apprentices employed from the start by their companies they train with?
Yes.
7. What help is there in finding a job?
Central Sussex College helps applicants find work placements but cannot guarantee a job. Help includes assistance with CV writing and through the college's Job Shop, CVs are held on file and sent to employers where appropriate. New and existing employers contact Central Sussex College and are matched to suitable applicants. Central Sussex College send the employer the CV and can assist in the recruitment process.
8. Do you keep lists of current job vacancies?
Yes.
9. Are training programmes available to those people that are already employed?
Yes.
10. Are applicants referred by Connexions Personal Advisers considered for training programmes?
Yes.
11. Is it possible for applicants to be kept on a waiting list if a place on a training programme is not immediately available?
Yes.
12. How should employers make contact?
Employers can make contact by phone or e-mail. We will talk to the employers about their training and recruitment requirements and either help them to recruit new staff or train their existing employees
13. Is there any charge to employers?
There is no charge for apprentices aged 16-18, but there is an employer contribution for apprentices aged over 19.
